The latest research on drug use, the effects on behaviour and skills to help as you support clients with addictions. This HSABC webinar applies questioning and exploration to understanding, and learning about the physiological effects of certain drugs, including: hallucinogens, depressants, stimulants, anabolic steroids and cannabis. During this webinar, participants will learn about: What drugs are being used; What someone looks like when they are on different types of drugs; How to assess and manage someone you think is under the influence of drugs; and How to manage a critical emergency. The session will give an overview of harm reduction best practices, the overdose crisis and resources available to workers.

Instructor:  Shari McKenzie-Ramsay 

Shari McKenzie-Ramsay graduated from UBC as a Registered Nurse in 2015. She has specialties in Emergency Nursing and is a Forensic Nurse Examiner providing care and assessments for people that have experienced sexual assault and interpersonal violence. Shari has previously worked at Lions Gate Hospital in the emergency department and in acute mental health and addictions at the Hope Centre as well as Magnolia House which is a mental health transition home. Currently, Shari works in the Emergency department in the Comox Valley as a bedside nurse, Forensic Nurse Examiner and is also a Clinical Practice Educator with JIBC for Military Search and Rescue Technicians and Primary Care Paramedics. She has a diploma in Addictions Medicine, participated in projects to reduce harm and stigma of people that use substances in a healthcare setting and works to provide support to the public and colleagues on harm reduction. Prior to becoming a Registered Nurse, Shari completed an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Carleton University (2001), in Ottawa. She is co-owner of Spiritus Wilderness Medical Training and has been teaching injury prevention since 1992. Spiritus started teaching overdose management including Naloxone training for Portland Hotel Society in 2010 and continues to provide education to peers and patients on the use of Naloxone for overdose management. In the past Shari has volunteered with victim services through the RCMP, ground search and rescue, and was the Canadian Red Cross injury prevention advisor for Risk Watch, a community based program to reduce injuries for school children in Nova Scotia. Shari is passionate about trauma informed care and harm reduction in health care and in community settings.
