Course Description
Applied Harm Reduction: Beyond the Basics is a six-part online series that takes the learner from the history of toxic drug policy in Canada to exploring everyday opportunities to foster harm reduction practice in the workplace. Learners will develop a critical understanding of the principles of harm reduction and how they can be applied to laws, policies, procedures, and everyday practices. Instructor Corey Ranger is a registered nurse and instructor with diverse experiences in frontline harm reduction work, policy and program development, and advocacy at all levels of government.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, learners will:
• Understand of the relationship between prohibitive laws/policies and the increasing volatility of the unregulated drug supply
• Understand the racist and colonial roots of modern-day drug laws and the subsequent disproportionate impact of those laws on marginalized communities
• Understand varying perspectives on harm reduction, their guiding principles, and the history of the harm reduction movement
• Apply the principles of harm reduction to inform program development, frontline practice, and community care
• Identify current gaps in harm reduction services, under-resourced communities, and opportunities for advocacy

Course Completion
Learners who complete all six modules of ‘Applied Harm Reduction: Beyond the Basics’ will receive a certificate of completion. Modules may be completed asynchronously.

Course Materials
Resources in the form of suggested readings, infographics, and online videos/trainings will be provided to registered learners prior to each module date.

Module Outline
The core curriculum of ‘Applied Harm Reduction: Beyond the Basics’ offers a mix of theoretical and practical teachings designed to foster self-reflection and capacity growth for learners. The course flows logically from historical perspectives to advocating for pragmatic public policy.

Instructor: Cory Ranger

'Corey Ranger is a registered nurse with experience working in harm reduction across Alberta--he has facilitated blood-borne pathogens programming for street-entrenched individuals in Edmonton's inner-city core; worked on the harm reduction team in Calgary; started HIV programming in Brooks; and most recently been responsible for implementing naloxone programming and supervised consumption services (SCS) in Medicine Hat. Corey has been a post-secondary instructor for community and mental health nursing at Medicine Hat College, and is an advocate for evidence-informed, pragmatic public policy. Corey is currently project manager for BCcampus, responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of a provincial peer training curriculum and standards of practice (SOP).'
