Job Description / Duties

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
 Model Christ in word and deed.
 45% - You will provide leadership while participating in and overseeing the regular activities of the
Men’s Emergency Shelter required for the smooth functioning of the program; taking responsibility
for all decisions, including when to contact emergency services and the after-hours supervisor, taking
an active role in defusing and de-escalating aggressive situations, ensuring organizational policies,
best practices, and safety procedures are followed, including proper incident reporting, maintaining
the cleanliness and safety of the space, and coordinating necessary services for repairs and cleaning.
 15% - You will be responsible for the direct supervision of staff, including interns, meeting regularly
with staff, debriefing incidents, completing performance reviews, providing Shelter specific training,
empowering and encouraging staff in their professional development and spiritual growth by
suggesting resources or educational opportunities, and arranging coverage for shifts, where necessary.
 15% - Build strong relationships with guests; providing supportive counselling, access to relevant
resources that further their goals, referring them to Case Management or other service providers, and
encouraging them to explore Christianity, including facilitating a devotional and leading Bible studies
when appropriate.
 15% - Facilitate excellent communication internally and externally. Provide timely, accurate, and
relevant information to the Shelter and HC&O teams for the wellbeing of our guests and staff and
consistency of our operations. Maintain an accurate record of statistics. For the safety of our guests
monitor age, sobriety, and sex of guests coming into the shelter.
 10% - Perform other duties as required by the Supervisor – Case Management and Shelter; upon
request, undertake speaking engagements and promote awareness of the needs and challenges of
guests/ shelter.
 Adhere to all UGM published policies, practices and procedures, including Occupational Health and
Safety.

If yes, we are looking for a Shift Supervisor – Shelter Worker, who is responsible for assisting the Hastings Chaplaincy Supervisor.
You will be helping to provide a vision for the ministry programs and spiritual leadership for all outreach and ministry support workers at the Hastings Facility. Ideally, you will have 3-4 years of related work experience with a knowledge of issues related to poverty, homelessness, addiction, and mental health, as well as related post-secondary education. If you have experience in developing and implementing outreach strategies to marginalized people, as well as experience in program planning and evaluation, then this position might be the right fit for you. You will frequently deal with clients in crisis situations, brought about by diverse problems. There will be other staff nearby to assist as required.
This is an Auxiliary, Part-time position. The position has a weekly schedule of Sunday to Tuesday and every other Saturday from 8:15 pm - 7:00 am. The position ends in January 2024.
