Job Description

Lookout Health and Housing Society is the safety net which provides minimal barrier housing and a range of services to destitute and low income adult men and women who have few, if any options, and who demonstrate an inability to meet their own needs.

Job Title: Development Associate (Proposal Writer) Classification: Excluded Staff

Organizational Structure

The Development department is responsible proposal and grant writing to further support direct service programs, fundraising for identified program needs or budget shortfalls, external communications regarding programming and community engagement, social media to educate the public and raise awareness regarding programs, donation management and volunteers. Reporting to the Coordinator and working in conjunction with all development team members, the Development Associate supports all aspects of the Development portfolio.

Summary of Responsibilities

Key duties and primary responsibilities are related to proposal and grant writing to address gaps in programs or to further support programs with minimal budgets or to expand wrap around services. Other duties include external communications and supporting development activities such as; special event organization including site openings, public announcements with funders, and funder/municipal requested site tours; and donor and volunteer relations. The Development Associate must understand and enforce Lookout’s rules of confidentiality.

Scope and Complexity

The Development Associate will research, design and deliver proposals and grants, as well as communications and support in response to media requests. The Development Associate will be required to communicate with a broad range of external and internal constituents including: funders, stakeholders, community organizations, the media, guests, donors, and the general public. The Development Associate will support development activities as directed by the Development Coordinator.

Communications

The Development Associate must develop a thorough understanding of Lookout’s objectives, services, programs and mandate. The Assistant will interact with all Development team members, and provide regular reports to the Development Coordinator and/or the Director of Development.

Duties/Accountabilities

1. Provides communications to:
• Research, write and support content for proposals and grants for funding,
• Draft, coordinate, edit, and produce media talking points, speeches, and presentations
• Write, distribute, and follow up on press releases and event calendar listings
• Support activities pertaining to Lookout’s website, social media platforms, blogs and newsletter(s) related to programming for education and awareness
• Track social media and news stories pertaining to Lookout programs through analytical tools such as Google Analytics
• Understand and enforce guest confidentiality rules in outgoing communications
• Research, compile and format content for Lookout’s external newsletter
• Implement specific strategies related to media relations
• Coordinate, liaise, and converse with media during fundraising events and public programs
• Research, design, and produce informational and promotional materials
• Report to and receive direction from the Development Coordinator on details related to any of these tasks
2. Assists the Development Coordinator to:
• Identify, cultivate and solicit partnerships and donations
• Support and raise awareness about Lookout at community, third party and sponsorship events
• Assist in planning and implementing media strategies for events and activities
• Proof read and review grant and proposal, letters of intents, requests for proposals, and funding applications
• Assist in the organization of fundraising campaigns
• Maintain a current knowledge of Lookout services, programs, and best practices
• Comply with all Government and Society policies and procedures
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications and/or a minimum of three-year work or educational experience in a similar field.
• Must have vulnerable sector criminal records clearance. Must be bondable.
• Current Class 5 driver’s license required

Skills and Abilities

i. Strong ability to manage the latest digital information technology systems, including websites and social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn); background or interest in photography is a definite asset
ii. Excellent oral and written communications and presentation skills that include research, editing and proofing
iii. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships in a diverse environment
iv. Excellent organizational and time management skills
v. Ability to analyze and resolve problems with tact, discretion and good judgment
vi. Ability to work within a collaborative team environment
vii. Demonstrated ability to operate office equipment with an excellent computer proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.), Wordpress, Canva and Microsoft Office programs
viii. Use of vehicle may be required
