SUMMARY:HSABC Webinar: Substance Use Awareness and Safety Training
DESCRIPTION:The latest research on drug use, the effects on behaviour and
  skills to help as you support clients with addictions. This HSABC webin
 ar applies questioning and exploration to understanding, and learning ab
 out the physiological effects of certain drugs, including: hallucinogens
 , depressants, stimulants, anabolic steroids and cannabis. During this w
 ebinar, participants will learn about: What drugs are being used; What s
 omeone looks like when they are on different types of drugs; How to asse
 ss and manage someone you think is under the influence of drugs; and How
  to manage a critical emergency. The session will give an overview of ha
 rm reduction best practices, the overdose crisis and resources available
  to workers.\n\n \n\nInstructor:  Shari McKenzie-Ramsay \n\nShari McK
 enzie-Ramsay graduated from UBC as a Registered Nurse in 2015. She has s
 pecialties in Emergency Nursing and is a Forensic Nurse Examiner providi
 ng care and assessments for people that have experienced sexual assault 
 and interpersonal violence. Shari has previously worked at Lions Gate Ho
 spital in the emergency department and in acute mental health and addict
 ions at the Hope Centre as well as Magnolia House which is a mental heal
 th transition home. Currently, Shari works in the Emergency department i
 n the Comox Valley as a bedside nurse, Forensic Nurse Examiner and is al
 so a Clinical Practice Educator with JIBC for Military Search and Rescue
  Technicians and Primary Care Paramedics. She has a diploma in Addiction
 s Medicine, participated in projects to reduce harm and stigma of people
  that use substances in a healthcare setting and works to provide suppor
 t to the public and colleagues on harm reduction. Prior to becoming a Re
 gistered Nurse, Shari completed an undergraduate degree in Psychology fr
 om Carleton University (2001), in Ottawa. She is co-owner of Spiritus Wi
 lderness Medical Training and has been teaching injury prevention since 
 1992. Spiritus started teaching overdose management including Naloxone t
 raining for Portland Hotel Society in 2010 and continues to provide educ
 ation to peers and patients on the use of Naloxone for overdose manageme
 nt. In the past Shari has volunteered with victim services through the R
 CMP, ground search and rescue, and was the Canadian Red Cross injury pre
 vention advisor for Risk Watch, a community based program to reduce inju
 ries for school children in Nova Scotia. Shari is passionate about traum
 a informed care and harm reduction in health care and in community setti
