HSABC Webinar: Decolonization - #2 Foundations of Decolonization

March 25, 2021, 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Please note: In order to register for this second module, you must have taken the first module on Personal Decolonization.

“No need to attend this webinar series if you have already attended the two day Decolonization Webinar from last year.”

Foundations of Decolonization (2 1/2 hours): In this second in the series module, participants will see how Canada has been built on a cracked foundation. We connect the dots of past and present so that non-Indigenous Canadians can have a deeper understanding of how we got to where we are, and the realities that Indigenous people face.

Instructors:

Rhiannon Bennett (she/her) is Musqueam and a much-sought-after speaker who is well known for asking tough questions in a manner that encourages engagement and dialogue. She is actively working to create a more equitable world for all.

She has been working with children, youth and families for over 20 years in a variety of roles. Professionally, she has worked with Indigenous youth and families with overarching themes of her work being Decolonization and Reconciliation.

In 2014, she was the first Indigenous person elected to the Delta Board of Education. While not successfully re-elected, she was inspired to launch a consulting firm with her running-mate, Andrea Hilder, to continue to do the important work.

Andrea Hilder (she/her) is an education professional, former foster parent and non-Indigenous parent of an Indigenous child. She has been a family support worker and a child and family advocate for two decades. Andrea also has her Provincial Instructor’s Diploma from Vancouver Community College. Decolonization is the lens through which she learns, lives and teaches.

Hummingbirds Rising Consulting’s vision is to work towards creating a society that understands the violence of colonization, its impacts and are actively reconciling and working towards Decolonization. They offer services for educators and policy makers who are working on learning more about Decolonization.
