HSABC Regional Event Series: North Coast: Decolonization & Substance Use and Mental Health
September 25, 2025, 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM
HSABC is excited to announce that we will be launching our Regional Event Series on the North Coast this Fall.
Join peers, sector experts, and local knowledge keepers at the Terrace Sportsplex for a full day of insightful workshops, engaging discussions, and valuable networking.
Event Program:
Workshop: Decolonization and Advocacy
Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
Description:
Decolonization is an active, ongoing process of dismantling colonial systems and rebuilding in ways that center Indigenous rights, knowledge, and sovereignty. This workshop provides a foundational understanding of colonization’s impacts and what it means to engage in decolonization meaningfully.
In this 3 hour session, participants will explore key themes such as the history and ongoing realities of colonization, systemic barriers upheld by colonial frameworks, and the responsibilities individuals and institutions have in advancing decolonization. The pace and focus are guided by group engagement, ensuring we take the time needed to unpack complex topics while fostering thoughtful reflection and discussion.
Workshop: Mental Health and Substance Use: Understanding and Supporting Clients while Building Staff Resilience
Time: 1:00pm - 3:30pm
Description:
This 2.5-hour session offers people working in the homelessness sector a practical overview of supporting mental health and substance use health in ways that are trauma-informed and mindful of diverse contexts. We will look at how the language we use shapes understanding and care, how mental health diagnoses can help or harm, and how stress, trauma, and protective factors interact over time. Participants will explore evidence-informed approaches—rooted in relationships, connection, and supportive environments—and consider how to stay healthy themselves while supporting others, with special attention to managing grief, loss, and the emotional demands of this vital work.
Facilitated Dialogue: Reflections, Challenges, and Successes in Community
Time: 3:30pm – 4:30pm
Through facilitated dialogue, shared stories and opportunities to ask questions, participants and special guests will engage with the workshop topics of the day and reflect on their practical applications and impacts in community.
Networking Social Hour
Time: 4:30pm - 5:30pm
Wrap up a full day of learning and reflection by networking with colleagues from across the region who are working in the homelessness-serving sector. Enjoy light refreshments as you connect, collaborate, and build relationships that strengthen our collective impact.
